3.Robot Keyboard Control

Keyboard Control

Keyboard Control1. Course Content2. Preparation3. Key Operations3.1 Chassis Motion Control3.2 Speed Adjustment3.3 Robotic Arm Control4. Source Code Analysis

1. Course Content

  • Control the robot car's chassis and gimbal camera via the keyboard

  • Understand the internal implementation source code of keyboard control

2. Preparation

  • Start the chassis driver node

xxxxxxxxxx
ros2 launch yahboomcar_bringup car_base.launch.py
  • Start keyboard control in the terminal

Tip

It is recommended to start it in an SSH-connected terminal rather than in VNC; the key experience will be smoother

xxxxxxxxxx
ros2 run common_demo keyboard_control

image-20260826212221801

3. Key Operations

Important

When using keyboard control, you need to switch the input method to English; otherwise the keys will not take effect.

3.1 Chassis Motion Control

KeyFunction
uMove forward-left (forward + turn left)
iForward
oMove forward-right (forward + turn right)
jTurn left in place
kStop
lTurn right in place
mMove backward-left (backward + turn left)
,Backward
.Move backward-right (backward + turn right)

3.2 Speed Adjustment

KeyFunction
qIncrease both maximum linear and angular velocity by 10%
zDecrease both maximum linear and angular velocity by 10%
wIncrease linear velocity only by 10%
xDecrease linear velocity only by 10%
eIncrease angular velocity only by 10%
cDecrease angular velocity only by 10%

3.3 Robotic Arm Control

  • Keyboard control supports single-joint selection adjustment and one-key pose reset.

KeyFunction DescriptionCorresponding Action and Output
1 ~ 6Select the joint currently being controlled (Joint 1 ~ 6)The terminal displays the selected joint number, current angle, and allowed range of motion
a / AIncrease the currently selected joint anglePublish an ArmJoint message; automatically limits when reaching the upper limit
d / DDecrease the currently selected joint anglePublish an ArmJoint message; automatically limits when reaching the lower limit
0One-key reset of all 6 joints to the initial poseRestore to the preset initial pose

Note

To close keyboard control, simply press ctrl+c in the opened terminal to end the process and close the terminal window

4. Source Code Analysis

  • Source code path

xxxxxxxxxx
$HOME/yahboomcar_ros2_ws/yahboomcar_ws/src/common_demo/common_demo/control/keyboard_control.py

  • reset_arm: reads the init_pose parameter to get the robotic arm's initial angles, calls pubSixArm to send the reset command, and clears the terminal buffer after waiting 2 seconds

  • adjust_joint: adjusts a single joint angle according to the joint index; it first validates the index's legality, then clamps via arm_bounds to prevent exceeding the limit. After publishing the ArmJoint command, it clears the buffer to ensure the arm stops as soon as the key is released

  • getKey: reads a single key character unbuffered via os.read

  • vels: formats and outputs the current linear and angular velocity values

  • main main loop: checks whether stdin is a TTY and sets cbreak mode to enable character-by-character input; it loops reading keys, maps u/i/o/j/k/l/m/,/. to chassis motion directions, uses q/z/w/x/e/c to adjust speed (±10%, with upper/lower limit clamping), uses 1~6 to select a joint, a/d to fine-tune the joint angle, 0 to reset the robotic arm, sets the velocity to zero for other keys, and exits on Ctrl+C
